John Willis Walter, Jr. graduated North Carolina State University with a B.S. in Forestry in 1930, that same year he opened Walter’s Nursery with the trees and shrubs he had planted while in school. After years of growth, he turned the firm over to his two sons, John J. and Craig, in 1975. John J. served in the U.S. Army from 1958 to 1960 in the 8th Engineers. He was stationed in Korea, on the Demilitarized Zone (DMZ), where he spent thirteen months in communications. His younger brother, Craig, served in the U.S. Navy from 1969 to 1973 and was attached to VA75 – Attack Squadron. He completed to cruises on the USS Saratoga aircraft carrier to the Mediterranean and Vietnam. Today John’s sons, Seth, Jim and Buck are partners with Craig and his son Joey. Jim, Joey and Buck are all graduates of Temple University’s Department of Landscape Architecture and Horticulture. Jim holds an A.S. in Landscape Design. Joey; a B.S. in Landscape Architecture, and Buck; a B.S. in Landscape Architecture, as well as an A.S. in Architecture from Pennsylvania College of Technology – Penn State. Twelve decedents of the founder, John Willis Walter, Jr., and a score of other folks are working hard to keep his nursery going strong today.
